There is a really cool event happening Monday, March 21st, entitled “You Must Learn”: The Legacy of Hip Hop Scholarship, that we wanted to share with you and the world. Mazi Mutafa, the Executive Director of Words Beats & Life, will be coming to AU to discuss the state of Hip Hop scholarship, leaders in the Hip Hop scholarship community, and seminal books in the field. As we know, Hip Hop was rooted in activism and so much more than just music. It was a way to educate and empower people through the music, and now, Universities all over the country are acknowledging this, as evidence through their Hip Hop archives and libraries; books, journals, and documentaries; courses and curricula; and innumerable homages to Hip Hop’s legacy. Mazi will be addressing these topics and well as the important events and initiatives in Hip Hop scholarship, community service and his organization, Words Beats & Life.
The nonprofit organization advocates for the transformative power of hip-hop culture in all its forms, empowering artists to relentlessly create and refine systems that demonstrate positive change through individual and collective brilliance. They publish a scholarly journal on Hip Hop, have an academy for youth to study, support upcoming and established artists and SOOO much more!
