Robert’s Stäff Picks!!!

Don’t forget, the Music Library is having an LP Bag Sale this Friday, April 26 from 10AM-2PM in front of Bender Library!!!

gallery-21138

This set of Staff Picks is dedicated to currently performing string quartets and new music ensembles/composers.

CD 5290 — Six Quartets, Op. 20 — Haydn

The quartets are pretty standard Haydn works but the cool part about this CD is that this recording is played by the Daedalus Quartet.  The Daedalus Quartet is considered a leader among the newest generation of string ensembles.  The members of this string quartet hold degrees from the Julliard School, Curtis Institute, Cleveland Institute, and Harvard University.  Min-Young Kim and Matilda Kaul play violin, Jessica Thompson plays the viola, and Thomas Kraines plays the ‘cello.  This CD was released in 2009.

CD 10048 — Meanwhile — eighth blackbird

eighth blackbird “combines the finesse of a string quartet, the energy of a rock band and the audacity of a storefront theater company.” The members of the ensemble  “hail from America’s Great Lakes, Keystone, Golden and Bay States, and Australia’s Sunshine State.  There are four foodies, three beer snobs and one exercise junkie.”  It seems like it would be fun to hang with these folks. Tim Munro plays the flutes, Michael J. Maccaferri the clarinets, Yvonne Lam the violin & viola, Nicholas Photinos the ‘cello, Matthew Dunvall percussion, and Lisa Kaplan the piano.  This CD was released in 2012.

adamsjl1

John Adams

I often reference works by John Adams in my Staff Picks, and I honestly don’t think I could ever forget to mention him.  Adams is a North American based new music composer.  Once again, the symphonic version of my favorite opera, CD 9695 — Doctor Atomic / Guide to Strange Places.  This CD was released in 2009.

Arvo-Part

CD 10053 - Adam’s Lament — Arvo Pärt

Do you like Arvo Pärt as much as Ethan Hicks? I doubt it, but you should still take a listen to this fantastic Pärt CD that explores many of his works including, but not limited to: Adam’s Lament, Beaatus Petronius, Salve Regina, and Estonian lullaby.  This CD was released in 2012.

UDC’s JAZZforum is on bagpiper, Rufus Harley 10/24

rufus harleyUDC continues their monthly JAZZforum series tomorrow with a discussion on Rufus Harley, who, as the only jazz bagpiper, occupies a unique place in jazz history. The event is FREE and open to the public, and just a short walk or bike ride from AU.

From the website:

JAZZforum: A Family Celebrates the Life and Music of Rufus Harley “the world’s first jazz bagpiper”

Wednesday, October 24, 2012
7:00 PM

Multi-instrumentalist, Rufus Harley (1936-2006) started studying the bagpipes after watching the Black Watch at John F. Kennedy’s funeral procession in 1963. In addition to several recordings as a leader, he recorded with Herbie Mann, Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins—and in later years, the Roots and Laurie Anderson. In 2007 Pipes Of Peace, a documentary by George Manney, was released. Several of his children—sons and trumpeters, Messiah and America Patton Harley, who frequently performed with their father, as well as daughters, Noah Harmony and Egypt will join us for this special evening. Recital Hall (Performing Arts Bldg. 46-West).

American Composers

We recently got a ton of scores in here at the Music Library. So many that we can’t really contain it to one post. Therefore in the interest of globalism and international unity, the scores will be categorized into American and European composers.

So let’s start with the American Composers, shall we?

Among other things, we received some Elliot Carter and Steve Reich. However the majority seem to be works by John Cage. In celebration of this, I thought I would present Mr. Cage himself playing a cactus. Awesome, right?

Anyway, here you go:

Louis Andriessen: De Tijd ~ M 1543 .A53 T5 1995

Morton Feldman: Rothko Chapel ~ M 1531 .F45 R65 2008

Steve Reich: City Life ~ M 947 .R45 C58 1998

Steve Reich: Tehillim ~ M 2019.5 .R45 T4 2010

Steve Reich: Different Trains ~ M 452 .R45 D54 1998

John Cage: Speech (1965) ~ M 1470 .C34 S64 1960

John Cage: Cheap Imitation ~ M 25 .C34 C443 1970

John Cage: Music for Wind Instruments ~ M 557 .C34 M8 1997

John Cage and Lou Harrison: Double Music ~ M485 .C34 D68 1961

John Cage: The City Wears a Slouch Hat ~ M 1527.5 .C.24 C58 2010

John Cage: A Book of Music for Two Prepared Pianos ~ M 214 .C3 B6 1960

John Cage: Hymns and Variations for 12 Amplified Voices ~ M 1529.5 .C34 H8 1979

Tomorrow we’ll have the scores from across the pond.

Some More Staff Picks by Alex

Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky

This collection puts together a huge amount of Stravinsky’s work. What I like about it is that every group either features Stravinsky as a soloist or as the conductor. The result is a series of recordings that highlight the sounds Stravinsky created in a way I haven’t seen elsewhere. Sometimes cast of as a bit of a vanity play by the composer, this nonetheless provides a good look at what he intended when writing his music.

CD 3247

First Impulse

The Creed Taylor Collection: 50th Anniversary

This collection celebrates the work Creed Taylor did in bringing about the Impulse label. It does this by providing CD’s of Impulses first 6 LP’s. These releases cemented Impulse as a heavy hitter in the Jazz charts in the 60′s. With this collection, not only do you get the music but a spiffy booklet containing the original liner notes and more!

The first part of the collection is my favorite, containing the reunion of J.J. Johnson and Kai Windig. The CD is a combination of two LP’s: The Great Kai & J.J.: Brand New, Swinging Together Again and The Incredible Kai Winding Trombones. Kai and J.J. are a great duo, bridging together Bop and Swing in a fashion that is unmistakable. Creed Taylor doesnt skimp on the Rythm either. The CD features plenty of stuff from Bill Evans, Art Taylor and Sticks Evans.

I would be remiss however, if I did not mention the other albums in the collection. Next up is the classic Ray Charles album Genius + Soul = Jazz followed by Out of the Cool by the Gil Evans Orchestra

But wait, it gets even better!

It also has the Oliver Nelson Sextet playing the album The Blues and the Abstract Truth, Coltrane’s quartet playing Africa/Brass. You really can’t go wrong with this collection.

CD 9349

~~~~~~~~~~~
Debussy: Complete Orchestral Works Vol. III
Not much to say about this one. It contains  three great piano works (Orchestrated by Caplet and Büsser) on top of the Danses sacrée et profane. Great works, performed well.
CD 6124
~~~~~~~~~~

BWV 1080: J.S. Bach’s “Art of the Fugue”

I give up! I really like the Art of the Fugue. Last time, I posted a recording by the Pittsburg Symphony Brass. This one is a more traditional recording, performed by Gustav Leonhardt and Bob van Asperen.

CD 6565

~~~~~~~~~~
Head Hunters: Herbie Hancock
Herbie Hancock, Bennie Maupin, Paul Jackson, Harvey Mason, Bill Summers.
Need I say more?
CD 9546
