Nobue’s Staff Picks

Concerto for Orchestra by Lutoslawski (CD 5201):

When you hear “Concerto for Orchestra,” most people think of the one by Bartok. Personally, this one by Lutoslawski is my favorite although I still love the one by Bartok. The melody in the lower strings at the beginning reminds me of the opening of Resurrection Symphony (#2) by Mahler a bit. This piece should be played more often! If you have not heard it already, you must. Really cool piece.

Michael Torke’s Color Music (CD 1373):

You want to hear colors in music? Torke’s got the colors. When I was in graduate school, I had a chance to play Ecstatic Orange which is on this CD. The piece sounded very NEW to me at that time, and I wasn’t sure what to think of it, but as you listen to it, it becomes addictive. There are some minimalistic elements, but nothing like Steve Reich or Philip Glass. You will definitely hear colors or colours or however you want to spell it.

Janacek, Hindemith, Prokofiev (CD 5620):

Janacek is one of my favorite composers. Sinfonietta may be played almost too often, but it is still one of my faves. The bestselling “1Q84” by Hikaru Murakami mentions this piece at the beginning of the book. There are a lot of good and exciting parts for brass and percussion. What more can you ask for?

Abbey Road by Beatles (CD 5122):

Among the many albums the Beatles released, this album has two of my favorite songs: Maxwell’s Silver Hammer and Octopus’s Garden. It is almost not right to say that the song makes me happy because Maxwell is killing people in the song. I wonder why the song sounds so happy… About Octopus’s Garden, who doesn’t want to visit an Octopus’s Garden?

Helen’s Staff Picks

So, looking for some AMAZING music to listen to this weekend? Check out some of my personal favorites:

Esta Plena - Miguel Zenón (CD 5123)

This incredible saxophonist blends the American sound of jazz with the cultural songs of his home country, Puerto Rico.

Best of the Black President – Fela Kuti (CD 5190)

If you don’t know who Fela Kuti is, it’s time to find out! This is the second staff pick featuring this incredible freedom fighter and king of Afro-beat!

Symphony No. 3, Opus 36 “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs” – Henryk Gorecki (CD 6037) Dawn Upshaw

This is a GORGEOUS symphony, and the vocalist, Dawn Upshaw is a name to be known. At first this collection of traditional-Polish inspired songs was criticized for being too “poppy,” but Henryk’s countrymen and foreign followers have come to love his third symphony.

El Tango – Astor Piazzolla (CD 5999)

My freshmen year this was THE CD being listened to…at least for the AU saxophone studio. It is an incredible compilation of tangos by and inspired by the great Argentinean bandoneón player, Astor Piazzolla.

Still Life – Noah Getz (CD 9445)

I had to add this new CD recently released by my saxophone professor, Noah Getz, but if you even sorta like the saxophone you should check this out! Noah’s impeccable style combined with his incredible musicality is a wonder to listen to!

Stuff to do this weekend

So the weekend is coming up and you have a problem. You have no idea what to do.

Well the DPA has a solution.

Ubu Rex

Where is it?

Harold and Sylvia Greenberg Theatre

When is it?

Thursday, February 16 at 8 pm

Saturday, February 18, at 2 pm and 8 pm

What is it?

This bawdy spoof on Shakespeare’s Macbeth provoked audience riots at the original 1896 production. The crude language and violent, absurd vision of the world, coupled with the characters’ outrageous greed, cruelty, and cowardice, satirizes the fundamental attitudes and practices of Western civilization. This seminal work of anti-theatre shattered common perceptions of what theatre was and could be, and paved the way for the Surrealists, Dadaists, Theatre of Cruelty, and Theatre of the Absurd.

AU Symphony Orchestra Concerto and Aria Competition

Where is it?

Abramson Family Recital Hall at the Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Arts Center

When is it?

First Round: Friday, February 18, at 7 pm

Final Round: Saturday, February 19, at 3 pm

What is it?

The talented members of the American University Music Department do musical battle for the honor of performing with the AUSO in the Fall semester of 2012.

So how much will all of this cost? Ubu Rex will set AU students and seniors back $10 and everyone else $15. The  Concerto and Aria competition is free of Admission.

Music About Presidents

In honor of Presidents’ Day we have found music that is all about presidents!

James Brown, “Funky President”

James Brown’s tune is about the decidedly unfunky Gerald Ford, whose propensity was for falling down rather than getting down. Brown paid him the ultimate tribute with this powerhouse cut, featuring a super-solid drumline and killer sax courtesy of David Sanborn and Pee Wee Ellis. It was also sampled to death in its later years.

The Ramones, “Bonzo Goes To Bitburg”

President Reagan’s quirky nickname, “Bonzo,” commemorated the 40th anniversary of World War II that canceled an excursion to a concentration camp in order to view a Nazi SS cemetery. This political faux-pas was the subject of many rock songs including The Ramones’ “Bonzo Goes To Bitburg” which prompted the lyric “You’re a politician/don’t become one of Hitler’s children.”

The Minutemen, “If Reagan Played Disco”

For every scheming politician there is a cacophonous punk rock song to lampoon him. The Minutemen’s one-minute-ish tribute to Reagan consists of only these lyrics, “”If Reagan played disco, he’d shoot it to sh*t/ You can’t disco in jackboots/Born, born on a white horse/he’d sing lame lyrics/and try to reach the working man.”

Animaniacs, “The Presidents”

The Animaniacs  created a song that named every US president (up to Bill Clinton, due to production date) to the tune of the William Tell Overture.  This iconic cartoon series ran from 1992-1998.
